Chinise New Year Month & Valentine's Day

11 February 2009, Wednesday

Time flies. The Chinese New Year is officially over on Monday, after the celebration of Chap Goh Mei (元宵节).. I really notice that there are culture differences even among Chinese from different places. In Malaysia (or Klang only?), those single ladies will go to the riverside and throw mandarin oranges (抛柑) on Chap Goh Mei.. When i tell my colleagues about this tradition, they laughed and said, if they really do so in Singapore, they will be fined coz is illegal to throw anything into the rivers in Singapore. Meanwhile, my collegue from China says that they normally eat "Tang Yuan" (汤圆,元宵, 鸭母淋) on the Chap Goh Mei... I was kinda surprise by the different way of celebration as I thought all Chinese celebrate the same way... Just like the 1st day of CNY ma....

However, for most people in Johor Bahru, the CNY has not over yet, until the praying ceremony on the 20th day of January (based on Chinese Calendar).. The praying ceremony (游神) is so meaningful to them that some of them will go back to work only after the ceremony.

Well, after Chinese new year, most people will started to concentrate on Valentines day, which this year fall on Saturday. I think the restaurant & florist will be the most excited parties compared to other individual.. haha.. I am the practical person, i would rather to receive practical gift than flowers... haha.. However, we are planning to go to Pulau Batam for celebration this year. Hopefully it will be good.
